Term 2 Week 1 - 23rd April 2021

Welcome to Term 2

I would like to welcome back all families to Term 2. A special welcome to new students and families who have joined the St Joseph's Regional College community this term.

Term 2 is always a very busy term. One highlight is the opportunity to showcase our wonderful College at the Year 7 2022 Information and Open Evening to new parents and Year 6 students next Monday 26th April. I know our senior students have volunteered to assist on the evening and I appreciate their pride in their school and desire to ‘show it off’ to future students and their families.

Statement of Intent: Our Shared Commitment

Dear families of St Joseph's Regional College, please find below a Statement of Intent which is reflective of our ongoing attentiveness to responding to sexual assault and sexual violence among young people.  Be assured of our continued support.

The role of schools in strengthening children and young people’s understanding of consent, and preventing and responding to sexual assault and sexual violence among young people.

A Statement of Intent was signed on Friday, 26 March 2021 by the Government, Catholic and Independent Schools to strengthen school-aged children and young people’s ability to form healthy relationships, understanding of consent and harm prevention. The Statement acknowledges the key role of school staff, in partnership with families, in supporting change.

This Statement is our system commitment, which recognises the innate dignity of the child and young person and their inherent goodness, ‘to enable each to achieve the fullness of life’. The Statement acknowledges the key role of school staff, in partnership with families, in supporting children and young people to reach their full potential by strengthening their ability to form healthy relationships, understand consent and harm prevention.

As a system of Catholic schools, we recognise our duties and responsibilities as educators and the growing concerns in the community in this area. We believe that each person is made in the image and likeness of God and deserves to be treated with dignity and respect regardless of race, gender, religion or ethnicity.

At St Joseph's Regional College, we believe in delivering a robust curriculum across stages. Healthy relationships, understanding of consent and harm prevention is in the following PDHPE units: Year 8 Relationships, Year 9 Better Safe than Sorry and Year 10 Respectful Relationships. We will supplement the curriculum by engaging the services of appropriate community-based organisations. In 2021 we have engaged with YOURCHOICEZ - Year 11, Real Talk - Years 8 & 10 and Safe on Social with all students in Years 7-10.

The voice of parents/carers is valuable as the first and continuing educators of their children. We encourage families to complete a survey to support our future direction in driving cultural change around respectful relationships.

The survey is open until Friday, 7th May and the link to access the survey is located below.

If you have any questions please email the College at sjrhport@lism.catholic.edu.au and a College leadership member will contact you.

Student Leaders Forum

On Wednesday, 21st April, College Captain, Ella Handley and Vice Captains, Luka Marshall and Mia Watts, attended the Student Leadership Forum at St Columba Anglican School. The Forum is designed to provide practical lessons on leadership and open communication between Port Macquarie’s student leaders so they may plan and present student concerns and initiatives, while creating greater links between the schools in the local area.

In addition to connecting with other student leaders, Ella, Mia and Luka were able to connect with the local, state and federal tiers of politics as guest representatives, Port Macquarie-Hastings Mayor, Peta Pinson, Port Macquarie MP, Leslie Williams and The Federal Member for Cowper, Pat Conaghan, attended the event. The forum explored topics such as successful leadership, government support following natural disasters, connecting youth to local support services, and respecting our local heritage and history.

I sincerely thank Ms Heidi O'Reilly, Leader of the Student Leadership Team for accompanying our leaders at this very important community meeting. Ms O'Reilly, said, "It was delightful to hear students passionately express their views on the issues that matter to them and their local community".

Well done and congratulations on creating some beautiful Indigenous artwork for all to enjoy in our playground.

St_Joseph_5_.jpgNext Friday, 30th April we will celebrate St Joseph the Worker Feast Day. As a faith community, we come together to celebrate the Feast of St Joseph the Worker, the Patron Saint of our College.

The day will begin with a Mass before students move to in-class activities, then a lunch shared within their Pastoral Care group and then finally games on the oval.

Students are permitted to wear their sports uniform on this day. Please note: this is a compulsory attendance day for all students.

I invite you to explore the following further information about our Patron Saint, St Joseph the Worker.

ANZAC Day

ANZAC Day is this Sunday, 25th April and as a College, we will commemorate the day on Wednesday during assembly time. The ANZAC Day Service and march have been given the green light to go ahead in Port Macquarie, with the march commencing at 10.00am and the main commemoration service commencing at 11.00am at the Cenotaph. While the community is able to line the streets to watch the Veterans march, unfortunately, due to COVID-19 restrictions, our students are unable to march and the SAPSS Marching Band will not be performing this year.

If you have photographs of your family commemorating ANZAC Day please feel free to email them to the College:  sjrhport@lism.catholic.edu.au

I thank College Captains, Ella Handley and Joseph Lewis who will represent our College at the ANZAC Day Service.

'Camp Aspire' at Macquarie University

During the school holidays, Macquarie University held their ‘Camp Aspire’ camp. Well done to the following students who took time out of the holidays attend, Year 12 students - Nelson Young, Wilson Hooper, Matthew Gleeson and Brianna Ducker. Year 11 students - Charlie Ross and Luke Banks.

Indigenous_Students_Macquarie_University_1_.jpg
The camp was originally scheduled for January but was postponed due to Covid. During the two night stay on the Macquarie Univerisity campus, students experienced activities that allowed them a taste of what their dream degree would involve, meet external organisation representatives and get involved in Cultural activities. The students also attended a faculty of the university that they had chosen based on their interests.

By attending the camp, students were able to gain the knowledge and experiences that will help them to make a decision on what their tertiary study options are once they finish high school.

Saltwater Freshwater Arts Alliance

Year 10 & 11 Indigenous students recently attended the Saltwater Freshwater Exhibition and basket weaving workshop at the Glasshouse.

The touring exhibition showcased Aboriginal artists and cultural practitioners from Gumbaynggirr, Dunghutti, Birpai and Worimi nations.

This was a great opportunity for students to view local artists' paintings and weaving work. After the tour, students were taught the art of weaving making their own small bowl/basket using a grass plant and palm fronds by local Aboriginal artist, Patricia McInherny

The University of Newcastle Department of Rural Health (UONDRH) planned a ‘road trip’ to bring a group of 12 university students, who are currently studying Medicine and Allied Health disciplines, to present health-related career and study information to interested SJRC and MacKillop College senior students.
The university students are members of BREAATHHE Rural Health Club, currently studying at Callaghan Campus of The University of Newcastle, Australia and volunteering because they want to pursue rural health careers.

Students attending were exposed to a variety of information sessions and practical hands-on activities along with access to an in-depth session for Year 12 who are keen for admission to Medical School and want input about UCAT and the admissions processes. Those attending took advantage of the opportunity to ask questions about accommodation and life at university.

Many thanks to MacKillop College Port Macquarie for hosting the event, to the volunteer students from The University of Newcastle and to Dr Ian Woodley for supporting the initiative and making the visit possible. #aHSC4opportunity #ruralhealth #uondrh #BREAATHHE

Congratulations to the SJRC senior students who took up this valuable opportunity. The level of your respectful interaction with the university students was exceptional.

Word of the week: Strength

Meaning: The emotional or mental qualities necessary in dealing with difficult or distressing situations.

In the last couple of years, our strength has been tested. Bushfires, COVID-19. floods.
The strength and resilience shown by many people affected by these disasters has been amazing.

Congratulations to SJRC Senior Football (Soccer) Teams who traveled to Kempsey today.  Both teams were vying for a place in the Lismore Diocesan Finals.  Results follow:

SJRC Senior Boys

The Open Boys Soccer squad competed in the Southern Lismore Diocese Catholic Colleges Cup on Wednesday 21sy April. The boys played 4 tightly contested games throughout the day with mixed results. The team started the day with a game against St Paul's College, Kempsey. After a rocky start the boys settled in well to the game to assert their dominance and end up winning the match 4 - 0. The team met John Paul College, Coffs Harbour in the second round.
After going down a goal in the opening minute, the boys chased the game for the duration of the match. After some narrow misses and a tough game, they lost 1-0. JPC were the eventual winners of the day. The third round saw the boys compete against the cross town rivals in MacKillop. With another hard fought game, the team were victorious with a 2-1 result. The final match was played against Newman College. The boys narrowly lost to Newman 2-1 to finish out the day. Well done to all the boys for the excellent play, sportsmanship and outstanding attitude throughout the tournament.

Rotary Club World Record Attempt

You may have heard or read about the Rotary Club of Port Macquarie West's attempt to break the existing world record for the 'Longest washing line of socks'. The attempt is planned for 4th-5th June 2021. We are asking families to check their washing machines, under beds and lounges for those missing socks. If you find a lonely sock, bring it in and pop it in the specially marked tub in the College Office. Together we can help the Rotary Club of achieving its goal of pegging 100,000 socks on the washing line.
