NAIDOC WEEK: SJRC HSC Indigenous Students Excel

Naidoc_Always_Was_Always_Will_Be_logo.png
At St Joseph's Regional College we value and respect each and every student for the contributions they make to our College every day. It is our sense of welcoming and belonging, that all students at our College are able to gain appreciable respect for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders’ culture. This has been showcased throughout Naidoc Week.

While the work that we do with our Indigenous students can be easily measured, it does, however, also need to be highlighted and indeed celebrated, particularly our current Year 12 Indigenous students, Cara Dowse-Collyer, Aliya Morris-Boyd, Jessica Olson, Rory Woods and Lachlan Wright all of whom have matriculated to university. These accomplishments have not been without hurdles. Therefore, it has been our aim to support the mindset of our Indigenous students and instil the confidence that a university degree is very much an achievable goal.

We are extremely proud of our current Year 12 Indigenous students and the careful stewardship that has allowed them to grow and have a sense of identity and purpose. This would not be achieved without the College providing these students with the confidence, support and hope to fulfil their aspirations, whatever they may be. These students have unknowingly become role models to our younger cohort of Indigenous students by showing them the possibilities that could lie ahead for them.

My sincere thanks, particularly, to our Indigenous Education Workers, Mrs Carly Taylor and Mr Braden Saggers for the great work that they do with our Indigenous students.

Please find following an overview of each student’s educational experience at St Joseph’s Regional College as well as their aspirations.

Cara Dowse-Collyer

081860.jpg

During Cara's HSC year, she studied Community and Family Studies, Geography, Biology, Mathematics Standard, English Standard and Studies of Religion 1unit. Cara received a College Academic Excellence Award at the Year 12 Major Award Ceremony. She would like to become a Secondary Technology and Applied Studies teacher specialising in Metal Technology. Cara has already accepted an offer to study in 2021 at the Australian Catholic University, Sydney in a Bachelor of Arts (Technology) / Bachelor of Education (Secondary).

“SJRC has provided me with a safe and comforting environment to engage in my education through Year 7-10. Specifically, in Year 11 and 12, I was able to develop closer friendships with my teachers that provided me with confidence to engage in my lessons more proactively rather than just sitting quietly and not understanding the content. Overall, the teachers are what really makes the school environment engaging and provides a bit of relief despite the stress of senior education.”

Aliya Morris-Boyd

081944.jpgEnglish Standard, Visual Arts, PDHPE, Community & Family Studies, Studies of Religion 2unit and Modern History formed Aliya’s pattern of study across Year 11 and 12. Aliya will take a gap year in 2021. She has deferred an unconditional offer to study Bachelor of Tourism Management at Southern Cross University, Gold Coast campus. She has also received a conditional offer to study a Bachelor of Creative Industries at Charles Sturt University. Aliya has applied to work as the Indigenous Education Worker at St Peter’s Primary school in 2021 during her gap year.

“Throughout my time at SJRC I personally only ever experienced a friendly environment amongst peers and forged great friendships and memories”.

Jessica Olson
081958.jpgThroughout Years 11 and 12, Jessica studied Food Technology, English Standard, Community & Family Studies, Business Studies, and Studies of Religion 2unit. Jessica plans to study Midwifery in 2021. She has already had an offer to study a Bachelor of Midwifery at Southern Cross University, Coffs Harbour campus and is currently awaiting notification of her University of Newcastle application.

“Throughout my time at the College, I have learnt the importance of harvesting strong friendships with my cohort - I believe this is something SJRC instils in students from day one. The importance placed upon friendships and creating a welcoming environment has ultimately shaped the way I viewed relationships throughout my teenage years and into the future.”

Rory Woods

082031.jpg

In Years 11 and 12 Rory studied English Standard, Studies of Religion 1unit, PDHPE, Modern History, Geography and Business Studies. Rory plans to study in the area of Medicine or Allied Health and has applied to study at University in 2021. He has been accepted into the University of Wollongong to study Exercise Science and the University of Newcastle’s Miroma Bunbilla program, which is an assessment course for entry into the Medicine degree in 2021. If successful, Medicine will be his number one choice for 2021.

Lachlan Wright

082032.jpg

During his HSC, Lachlan studied English Standard, Mathematics General, Modern History, PDHPE and Studies of Religion 2unit. Lachlan received the Quiet Achiever Award at the Year 12 Major Award Ceremony. Lachlan is interested in studying either Medicine or Physiotherapy in 2021 and has received an offer from Charles Sturt University to study Physiotherapy. He has also been offered a position at the University of Newcastle’s Miroma Bunbilla program, which is an assessment course for entry into the Medicine degree in 2021. If successful, Medicine will be his number one choice for 2021.

Of SJRC, Lachlan has this to say - “Honestly, the highlight of my life so far, growing with peers and teachers in a supportive environment.”

I'm excited to see what next year holds for this group of amazing young leaders. On Thursday, our College Captains, Vice Captains and House Leaders had the opportunity to attend a Leadership Morning Tea held in the College Library. The morning tea allowed the House Leaders an opportunity to connect with their Pastoral Coordinator to discuss their personal aspirations and goals for their respected houses. With House Leaders and their Coordinators all seeking to claim the winning House Shield, it appears we are going to have an exciting year ahead.

Year 11 Reflection Day

The Year 11 Reflection Day has once again proven to be a valuable personal experience for our senior students and I commend this group of young role models for their participation and positivity throughout the day. These days take a huge amount of planning and I thank the many teachers who were involved in organising the day's activities.

I refer you to our Leader of Pastoral Care, Year 11, Ms Flanagan.

Yr11 Reflection Day 231120 (2) - Copy.jpg

On Monday this week, Year 11 students travelled to the Francis Retreat Centre in Bonny Hills for their Year 11 Reflection Day. This particular cohort of students, proved once again, why we as a College, are so very proud of them. They threw themselves into all the activities presented and had a great day ‘away from the books’.

The aims of the Reflection Day were to reflect on where they have been and the memories they have experienced and shared since their first days of Year 7. Our morning began with a slideshow presentation which showed just how much they have grown and changed over the years – they were so very little and cute in Year 7! From there, students were asked to consider their own unique gifts, talents and abilities and the way that they have been shaped by God for a purpose. Our final session for the day focused on what impact the students hoped to make as Year 12 students at the College and the ways they could contribute to creating a community that was centred on kindness, respect and striving for their best. It was wonderful to witness their smiling faces in break times, as they danced, played sport and just enjoyed the sunshine and company of their peers and PC teachers.

What topped off the day for me, was receiving a number of emails the following day from students who personally thanked me for a wonderful day.

Year 11 truly are stars of our community and it is an absolute pleasure to work with you all as your Leader of Pastoral Care. Well done!

Ms Flanagan

Uniform

size_swap.jpg

Last week, I mentioned that the College Uniform Code of Presentation will be changing in 2021. However, our current rules regarding uniform will still apply for the remainder of 2020.

We appreciate your support and ask that families continue to assist us in our efforts to ensure that all students are wearing the correct uniform every day.  Breaching the Code of Presentation will result in a uniform infringement being issued.

We understand that we are nearly at the end of the year and many students are starting to outgrow their current uniforms. If your child has grown out of their uniform, please contact the College Office so we can arrange to swap their uniform for a bigger size.

Please find details of the changes along with the full Code of Presentation:

Changes to the Uniform Code of Presentation - 2021

Change_ahead.jpg

2021 will see the implementation of some changes to the College Uniform Code of Presentation. Please see the revised policy attached. A copy of this will be in the 2021 College Diary for future reference.

The main changes include:

SPORT UNIFORM - students are permitted to wear sports uniform to and from school on their sports day, for PD/H/PE practical lessons and for other elective practical lessons, as negotiated with their teacher eg. Marine Studies, PASS, Dance or Drama practicals.

Sport uniform may also be worn to school on days where school sport team training or organised sports competitions occur.

NB. Please be mindful that students who participate in Technology subjects require leather shoes to be worn for the practical lessons. This applies to ALL of Year 7 and 8 as well as students in other year groups who choose electives in the TAS area. If sport uniform is worn to school and a practical lesson is timetabled, black leather school shoes must be brought to school to change into. Alternatively, we recommend buying sport shoes with a full leather upper.

HAIR - more explicit instructions as outlined.

MAKE-UP - make-up and nail polish are not permitted, including acrylic, French tip or shellac nails. Eyelash extensions are not permitted.

JEWELLERY - Junior jewellery remains unchanged, however, senior jewellery has changed.

We appreciate the support of families to ensure students are well-groomed and wearing the College uniform correctly and with pride each day.

I encourage you to view the new College Uniform Code of Presentation 2021 Policy in its entirety.

YEAR 7 IMMUNISATION

Year 7 students will receive the second dose of the HPV vaccination on Tuesday, 8th December 2020

Year 7 students are permitted to wear their sport uniform on this day.

No paperwork is required to be presented on the day as NSW Health retain records of those students who are due for dose two.

Christmas Hamper Appeal

Thank you to families, staff and students for your many and various donations that enabled us to put together: 24 Box A, 34 Box B and 24 Box C type Christmas hampers. The different combinations, depending on the size of the family, will now be distributed to families in need throughout the St Agnes' Parish community.

We sincerely thank you and appreciate your support. It is amazing to see the joy on the faces of those who receive Hampers each year.

Thank you also to the Year 10RED3 class for getting into the spirit of giving by donning their Santa hats to assist in loading the hampers into utes for delivery.

Rounds Classes 2021

Change_Request_Form.png

Rounds classes for 2021 were published to students this week. These classes are constructed in consultation with current teachers and Leaders of Pastoral Care. Every effort is made to take into account the many needs of over 200 students in each year group.

Occasionally, a student may wish to request a change of Round classes. The process for these requests is that students should obtain a form from the office, complete the form and return it to the office. We would ask that parents do not ring the office requesting such changes (unless there is confidential information which needs to be discussed), as the procedure with the forms still needs to be followed.

The process of obtaining the form and interacting with staff can sometimes be a valuable learning and maturing opportunity for many students, and a small step towards the independence they all need to develop before leaving the safety of a school environment.

Year 7-10 Reports

School-Reports.jpg

Reports for students in Years 7-10 will become available on December 15th via our Parent Portal. A reminder that all reports are now issued electronically, and paper copies would only be issued on request.

The Parent Portal is a secure web-based application which contains information about the College and your child, including timetables, attendance, semester reports, and class and teacher information. All past reports can also be accessed on the parent portal, and future reports will be uploaded as they become available.

Any parent not yet registered to access reports electronically will need to create an account as the first step. For security reasons, the username for this account must be your email address recorded at the school.

Instructions on how to access the Parent Portal are below and can also be found on the College website.

Season of ADVENT

Hope.JPG

The season of Advent begins this Sunday and the theme for the first week of Advent is Hope. Christians can often confuse the word hope for wishful thinking. If we hope something will happen, we have no control over whether or not it will take place.

But the biblical sense of hope is very different. Hope, in the Bible, exists as a secure assurance, a trust placed in a trustworthy God. God has not failed us in the past, and therefore, if he claims he will do something in the future, we can have a hope that he will fulfil that claim.

Hope waits and endures.
It isn’t flimsy or merely wishful thinking.
It can withstand fire, trials, and despair.

Hope is an important thing. It helps us during significant trials or times of distress. It offers us security that God will arrive and though we cannot see him now, we will see him face to face one day.

Prayer through Music

Listening to music is a powerful way to relax and manage stress. A slower tempo song can soothe the stress of the day by quieting your mind and relaxing your muscles.

As we begin to plan our Christmas and end of year events, we must not forget the poor and lowly around us who need our prayers and charitable acts. Because of Jesus, there is Hope For Everyone, including the lowly, the poor, the broken, the outcasts and the sinners.

Geography Excursion

On Tuesday, 24th of November, HSC Geography students went on their Ecosystems at Risk Field Trip to Dorrigo National Park. Students visited the Rainforest Centre, the Skywalk and walked to Crystal Shower Falls, discovering the importance of sub-tropical rainforest ecosystems, reasons why they are currently threatened ecological communities and how they can be effectively managed in the future.

Thank you to this group of students who were excited to be able to finally attend an education excursion. You were certainly role-models for our College.

Year 9 ISTEM

Year 9 iSTEM have been working hard creating their own F1 Dragster cars to race against the clock, and each other. Students learnt about what makes an aerodynamic car before designing their car in CAD, and having it made on our own CNC machine. Students then added all of the finishing touches on their cars to get them race-ready.

The drag race was held in the Hall as they pitted their designs against each other. The cars are powered by a CO2 canister, and the students' cars reached speeds of up to 62km/hr .

Great work Year 9!

The State Library Weekly Writing Prompts

Based on items from the NSW State Library, a weekly prompt will be provided for students who wish to sharpen their creative writing tools.

From penguins to picnics, floods to feasts, explore a range of thought-provoking stimuli and embark on your creative writing journey. New prompts will be added each week during Term 4, so remember to check back in.

Here’s the writing prompt for this week:

This magical underwater world was created by May Gibbs for a book that was never published.

E-Book of the Week

Did you know we have an amazing e-book and audiobook library available for students? There are so many varied titles, and therefore it is so difficult to choose one to focus on.

With Year 10 students attending a Writing Skills workshop this week, this e-book gives hints on how to stretch that creative writing muscle.

Book Bentos

Students in some Year 9 English classes have been creating Book Bentos as a creative response to their recreational reading. Students use Book Bentos as an alternative visual and creative approach to reflect on a text – some examples are shown below.

The “Homework Hub” was established to provide students with a chance to complete set work and study away from the distractions that can occur at home.

It takes place in the library at the following times:

  • Monday to Thursday 3.15pm to 4.30pm.

Attendance is voluntary and is under the supervision of experienced staff.

The library is open from 7.30am every morning providing another opportunity for our students to work quietly outside of school hours.

If your son or daughter struggle to do their homework and study, this may be the solution to get them “on the way” to the results they are looking for.
