Year 11 Award Ceremony
This afternoon I had the pleasure of attending the Year 11 Academic Award Ceremony for 2020. Thank you to Ms Heidi O'Reilly who organised the Ceremony in Ms Heidi Flanagan's absence. I would also like to extend my gratitude to both teachers for their guidance of our students throughout this year.
On Monday we will hold a further Ceremony to present the Student Leadership Badges, the St Joseph's Regional College Spirit Awards, and the St Agnes’ Catholic Parish Youth Award. We congratulate Year 11 students on their commitment and wish them all the very best as they transition to their HSC studies. Award recipients and photos will be in next week's newsletter.

Late Arrivals and Early Departures
Arriving late and departing early places increased pressure on students in relation to catching up on missed work. It is also disruptive for other students and teachers when students enter or leave a lesson during class time.
Wherever possible, please ensure appointments are made outside of school hours. However, if this is not possible, it would be appreciated if collection times can be arranged for the end of a period. For period times please refer to the bell times below.
Students arriving late must report to the College Office prior to going to PC. This includes arriving late during PC time (8.45am- 9.05am). Doing this will avoid students being marked absent.
When collecting students early from the College, please follow the procedure below:
- Note from parent/guardian. Noting reason for early leave, time student will be leaving and who will be collecting your child.
- Students are to report to the College Office prior to morning PC, where an Early Leave Pass will be issued.
- The student then shows the pass to their respective class teacher at the beginning of the lesson they will be leaving from. When close to departure time, the student then politely informs the class teacher that it is time for them to go to the office to be collected.
Please note: If a student does not come up at the arranged time, we may not be able to call the classroom or use our internal or external systems. This may result in parents having to wait until the end of the period to collect their child.
Thank you for your cooperation with these procedures.

Year 11 Reports and Awards
Year 11 students and parents can now access Year 11 End of Course reports on our parent portal. Students were today presented with Outstanding Application and Outstanding Achievement Awards, and other awards will be presented on Monday. Of course, our award ceremonies have had to be very different this year due to COVID-19 guidelines.
Our congratulations go to all students who have received awards as a result of their efforts in the Year 11 courses.

Busways - afternoon transport to a different destination
Many students are wanting to catch a different bus than their allocated bus of an afternoon to a different location for various reasons.
Busways have informed us that their current bus capacity is unable to accommodate the extra students wishing to catch the bus to sport/training/friends. Students catching a bus to their homes are guaranteed a position on the bus. All students must present their bus pass to the driver. Those wanting to catch the bus to other venues cannot be guaranteed a position on the bus once it reaches capacity. Unfortunately, this week, some students were unable to catch a different bus. We understand this can be very upsetting for your child, however, Busways have recommended that you make private or alternative arrangements for your child in the event that the bus is at its capacity.

25th November 2020
This week marks Media Literacy Week for 2020. In an age of ‘false news’ and misinformation, this very important recognition of the strength of being ‘information literate’ is extremely timely. You can see a very comprehensive array of resources, including prominent journalists discussing the importance of discernment when reading information here.
Significant Literacy Date
Following on from last week’s reference to “Enola Holmes”, this week’s literary date refers to the birth, in 1908, of Martha Gellhorn. Martha went on to become an intrepid travel writer and journalist, reporting on many major conflicts across 60 years.
“Nothing is better for self-esteem than survival.”
Kids Lit Quiz Update
Last week, our team, consisting of Jack McManus, Mikayla Hill, Tiana Daly and Hannah Thompson competed in the National Final of the Kids Lit Quiz Competition. These students once again showed extraordinary depth of knowledge in their answers based on their engagement with literature. Unfortunately, we were not winners on the day, but we have certainly paved the way for future involvement in this Competition.
November is Picture Book Month
November is Picture Book Month! We have a large collection of picture books in St Joseph’s Regional College Library, where the benefits of engaging with visual literacy can be explored. Higher order thinking skills, conceptualisation, decoding and imagination all come into play when reading a visual text.

We love catching up with past students and following their journeys since graduating from St Joseph's Regional College. The breadth and variety of career paths and life choices are amazing and make for such interesting reading. Our current students will find inspiration in these stories.
This week's alumni update is Kathleen Cutajar. Kathleen graduated from St Joseph's Regional College in 2016. She completed her Bachelor of Psychology (Honours) at Macquarie University this year and is currently completing a placement in Mental Health Mentoring.

What is ‘Literacy Enrichment’ at SJRC?
It’s opportunities in and out of SJRC that enrich students’ understanding of and experience with media, film, reading, writing, and language in general. It’s excursions, festivals, writing, debating and public speaking competitions, and live performance.

Year 8 and Year 10 Writers' Enrichment Day
If you have an interest in writing and you want to further develop your craft, then the Writing Enrichment Day is for you.
The Writers’ Enrichment Day is free.
Dates:
Year 8 Writers' Enrichment Day is Thursday 12 November, Week 5, via zoom at school.
Year 10 Writers' Enrichment Day is Thursday 26 November, Week 7, either zoom on-site or at MacKillop.
We are lucky enough to have local author Hayley Lawrence at the helm for each of these Writing Enrichment Days. SJRC students will be familiar with her gripping novel ‘Inside the Tiger’.
Find out more about Hayley’s work here:
The State Library Weekly Writing Prompts
Based on items from the NSW State Library, a weekly prompt will be provided for students who wish to sharpen their creative writing tools.
From penguins to picnics, floods to feasts, explore a range of thought-provoking stimuli and embark on your creative writing journey. New prompts will be added each week during Term 4, so remember to check back in.
Submit your creative writing entries for a chance to be published on The State Library website.

Here’s a sample prompt from previous weeks:
Imagine that one morning you wake up, eat your breakfast and go off to school. Everything is the same as it is every day — until you walk through the door. Suddenly, your classroom dissolves and you find yourself standing in the classroom in the photograph.
Hey you! What have you watched, read or listened to lately?

We know how much SJRC students can enjoy a book, a good movie, a podcast and music.
And we know how cool it would be to read their reviews here on their very own school newsletter.
So, students of SJRC: Now’s the time to scale the great heights of seeing your name in print and knowing that you’ve provided valuable information to your peers and friends about a book or movie or podcast that they would love
- or not.
Email your recommendations to Mrs McKee (penny.mckee@lism.catholic.edu.au) and let’s read your take on books, podcasts and music that is great! Or not so much.

Abigail Gammon - National Youth Science Forum 2021
Congratulations to Year 11 student, Abigail Gammon, on successfully navigating a rigorous application process to be selected to be part of the National Youth Science Forum (NYSF) for Year 12 students in January 2020.
The aim of the NYSF is to inspire young Australians to value Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) and its importance in our communities. The Year 12 Program is a 10-day residential event designed to give students a broader understanding of the diverse study and career options available in the STEM arena and to encourage continued studies in these fields. At the program, run from 5th-22nd January next year, there will be keynote speakers, lectures, workshops, debates, expos, and social activities. They will also provide local in-person STEM visits and events held at hubs across the country.
Abigail’s rigorous application process started with an online application, including a 1000-word statement on her interest in STEM and the role of STEM in society. She also had to submit a resume detailing her academic achievement and community involvement. From this application, she was invited to an interview that involved four different half hour panel interviews ranging from questions on current science issues to general knowledge and current affairs questions. In one of these interviews, Abigail had to present a 5-minute demonstration of a piece of science apparatus that she had invented and then give a 3-minute speech on a new science topic including world science issues.
The NYSF then approved Abigail’s application and she was accepted. Over the next couple of weeks, she will attend orientation sessions where she’ll meet other successful students and alumni of the NYSF.
We are very proud of Abigail’s success in her pursuit of excellence in this field and know she will be a wonderful ambassador for our College at the NYSF in January.
Well done Abigail.

Earlier in the term we hosted our very own Archibald Prize inspired competition. All Year 9 Visual Arts students chose their very own celebrity to draw. These were then displayed anonymously in the school library with ballot papers for members of the student body to each place their votes. After a week or two went by, we then counted the votes and picked four Major Awards and five Highly Commended. Such a tremendous effort from all students who participated!

Year 9 iSTEM
Year 9 iSTEM have been working on their Mechatronics projects for this term. Students are utilising Arduino to code their projects and using Servo motors to control a variety of mechanisms dependent on their chosen project direction.

Year 10 iSTEM
Year 10 iSTEM students have been using the fusion 360 and Adobe Illustrator computer programs to plan and design their mouse-trap cars. After settling on their final design some students have now begun the prototype process where they send their design to the laser cutter enabling a precision fit and finish to their designs.

Assistant Leader of Learning TAS
The “Homework Hub” was established to provide students with a chance to complete set work and study away from the distractions that can occur at home.
It takes place in the library at the following times:
- Monday to Thursday 3.15pm to 4.30pm.
Attendance is voluntary and is under the supervision of experienced staff.
The library is open from 7.30am every morning providing another opportunity for our students to work quietly outside of school hours.
If your son or daughter struggles to do homework and study, this may be the solution to get them “on the way” to the results they are looking for.
