SJRC News in Brief: Term 4 Week 1 - 18th October 2024
Dyslexia Awareness Month
October is Dyslexia Awareness Month, aimed at raising awareness and starting conversations around Dyslexia. In support of the #GoRedforDyslexia campaign, on
Thursday, students wore RED, in support and solidarity with those who have dyslexia. We are joined with our fellow Catholic Schools and the wider Hastings community who are all going RED at some point in October.Dyslexia is a neurological disability that affects 1 in 5 people and impacts on the development of literacy skills. It is characterised by problems with spelling, accurate or fluent word recognition, working memory, phonological decoding and weak phonemic awareness. Put more simply, people with dyslexia have difficulty processing/identifying the sounds in written and spoken language, which
makes reading/writing/spelling difficult. Early identification and intervention are key to helping students with dyslexia.

If you are looking for further information on dyslexia, the Code Read website, https://codereadnetwork.org/ has some great information and resources as does the NSW SPELD website

HSC Exams Begin
This week our Year 12 students commenced their HSC exams with English Paper 1 on Tuesday morning. The students, whilst nervous, were also excited to begin the last chapter of their formal education journey at St Joseph’s Regional College. Over the holiday break, many students attended the College each day as part of their final preparation process.
We wish Year 12 the best of luck over the rest of the exam period and await the release of results in December that we anticipate will be a fantastic reflection of their dedication over the last two years. Well done Year 12 on a great start to the HSC exams.
Finally, I would like to acknowledge the generosity of Kenny Little’s Fruit and Veg for supplying fresh fruit to our Year 12 students to help kick start their brains at the start of each exam, the students have truly appreciated this wonderful gesture.
