Term 3 Week 10 - 23rd September 2022

Congratulations Year 12 2022

This week, the St Joseph's Regional College community gathered to celebrate and acknowledge Year 12 2022, as they complete their formal secondary education. The last week of school for our Year 12 students included rehearsals, and a fun activity day at Stony Aqua Park, they also shared a special lunch as a year group, complete with beautifully laid out tables with linen cloths. On Tuesday evening, staff, students and their families attended a beautiful Graduation Mass at St Agnes' Church conducted by our Parish Priest, Fr Paul Gooley.  On Wednesday, we celebrated the academic and cultural achievements of Year 12 at a Major Awards Ceremony.

Year 12 2022 Graduation Mass

A beautiful Mass in celebration of our graduating Year 12 2022 cohort was shared with families and friends at St Agnes' Church on Tuesday evening. Thank you to Fr Paul Gooley for your words of wisdom, support and encouragement. Thank you also to Mrs Sarina McNamara and Year 10 musicians and singers: Georgia McMahon, Lauren Johnston, Madeleine Tunbridge, Ella-Jasmine Gardner, Jack Davies, Adam cook, Taylah Davidon and Year 11 student, Pat McGahon. Also to Adam Jennings and Dane Bittu, who were Altar Servers at the Mass.

Year 12 Major Awards Ceremony

It was wonderful to have families join us at the College after a two-year hiatus due to Covid for the Year 12 Major Awards Ceremony. It was also fantastic to be able to welcome our special guests:

We were very fortunate to have Birpai Aboriginal Elder, Uncle Bill, open our ceremony with a Welcome to Country, and also have special guest and former student, Hannah Freeman, our Dux of 2021, who took time away from her tertiary studies to address our College community. To Mrs Green, the SJRC Senior Concert Band and singers Lauren Johnston, Alannah Steele & Georgia McMahon for performing the College song and National Anthem so beautifully.

Thank you also to our newly appointed College Captains for 2023, Sarah Garrett and Findlay Marshall, who shone in their first official duty, only hours after being appointed, assisting with the handing out of awards.

As with all our College events, it takes a team to bring masses and ceremonies altogether. I would like to acknowledge and thank our incredible staff for being flexible and efficient in the changing of event dates due to the National Day of Mourning for Queen Elizabeth II. My sincere thanks to Mrs Kellie Croft, Leader of Student Wellbeing- Year 12 and Mr Timo Gobius, Leader of Evangelisation for coordinating the mass and the award ceremony. And finally, to all SJRC students who formed a guard of honour; a very fitting sendoff for our departing Year 12 cohort.

I invite you to read my College address below:

Firstly, to our special guests with us here today, Fr Paul Gooley, thank you for your continued support of our students in both their academic and spiritual development. I would also like to extend my welcome to families and friends who have gathered here today for this special occasion.

To our parents who are with us for the last time today, thank you, for your loyalty and support of our wonderful College; most particularly during the challenging times over the past few years.

On behalf of the College community, I would like to congratulate Year 12 for enriching St Joseph’s Regional College. The Class of 2022 will be forever remembered as a group of legends. During your High School years, you have endured bushfires, floods, three years of pandemic, cancellations, face masks, online preliminary exams, continual change……. You have modelled amazing resilience and grit while always remaining focussed, hopeful and faith-filled. You have drawn on your character strengths time after time. As a group, you have been there for each other and you have lived out the quiet, wise and humble spirit of St Joseph, through your genuine sense of care for others. For this, I sincerely thank you.

Now as you gather here for your final assembly, I believe it is fitting to say that you have had a stabilising and grounding influence on our College community as a whole. In this regard, I would like to pay special tribute to our elected Year 12 leaders:

To College Captains: Leo Hunt and Amelia Stubbs, we thank you for your great service and loyalty to our community. You have been outstanding role models and ambassadors of the College.

To our Vice-Captains: Don Bittu and Olivia Montgomery, thank you for your support and leadership and for always stepping forward when needed.

To House Leaders:

Flinders:     Keatin Nowak & Lillian Sadler
Hastings:    Kobe Roser & Hannah Dakin
Innes:         Luke Banks & Amahli Kennedy
Macquarie: Jonah Garven & Sea McManus
Oxley:         Samuel Kobelke & Charlie Ross
Wilson:       Will McCoubrie & Bronte Hudson

….you have fostered a strong sense of House spirit, friendly rivalry and supported your Leaders of Student Wellbeing with passion.

This year, we introduced new Student Leadership positions. These positions played an important and vital role in fulfilling the College’s desire to further grow the characteristics of our young leaders of the future.

I congratulate and thank, our:

Student Leaders, Mission - Joshua Bartlett, Bella Buckridge & Kellie Burke
Student Leaders, Wellbeing - Harrison Freudenstein & Lara Harrington
Student Leader, Sustainability - Daniel Ryan

Together this new look student leadership team has certainly left a positive impact on our College. To add to this, I can only say that Year 12 as a whole has been an exceptional group whose families should feel justifiably proud.

I would also like to extend a special thank you to key staff members who have been instrumental in the achievements of Year 12.

Mrs Croft- Leader of Student Wellbeing: Year 12 thank you for your stewardship and care.
Mrs Tinsey- Leader of Future Pathways, who has spent countless hours preparing you for life beyond SJRC.
To Assistant Principal- Learning and Teaching Mr McCosker, and Leader of Curriculum Mr Lutton, thank you for your leadership and guidance of our senior students as they navigate their way through the HSC.

This year we will farewell Mr McCosker as he embarks on retirement. The end of an era!

To Year 12 Pastoral Care teachers:
Mr Sainsbury, Mr Buckley, Ms Smith, Mr Toohey, Mrs Pares and Mrs Freeman
Thank you. The caring and nurturing manner in which you have supported the young people who were in your care is nothing short of amazing.

And let us not forget our Leaders of Student Wellbeing who guided you in your junior years.

To all KLA Leaders and course teachers, thank you for your expertise, persistence, and support, not only during Year 12’s senior years but throughout their entire time here at St Joseph’s Regional College. My thanks also to all Support staff for your generosity of spirit in assisting Year 12.

To Year 12 parents, thank you for entrusting your sons and daughters to our care, and guiding them through this most important part of their lives.

Year 12, last night at your Graduation Mass, Fr Gooley spoke about your time here at St Joseph’s Regional College; he prayed that your time here has taught you how to live well. Not only how to survive academically, but also, your time here has taught you how to thank God, how to care for others, how to forgive and love others and how to give back to the community. He asked you to thank God for the opportunities, family, friends and staff at the College but also to thank God for the gift that is YOU.

Finally, I hope that over the next few weeks, you will be able to approach your exams in a confident manner, so you are determined to demonstrate all that you have learnt over these past years. It is my hope that you will encounter all kinds of exciting things as you move beyond college life. But it remains a world awaiting your energy, your dedication and your generosity of heart.

We are so proud of each and every one of you. May God bless you in your endeavours.

2022/2023 Student College Leaders

On Wednesday, we gathered as a College community to witness the announcement of and inauguration of our Student Leadership Team for 2023.

Our College candle represents the light of Jesus and the life and faith of our College. It assists in lighting the way for our journey through our school years and into adult life. It also represents the collective leadership shown by our past Year 12 students.

At the Ceremony of Light, Amelia Stubbs and Leo Hunt, our 2022 College Captains, passed on this symbol to our newly elected College Captains for 2023, Sarah Garrett and Findlay Marshall symbolising a formal handover of the responsibilities and leadership of a Year 12 group. As one group graduates and departs the College, another step up to fill the role.Congratulations_fancy.png

St Agnes' Parish Senior Drumline makes it Five in a Row

On Sunday 11th September the Senior Drumline composed of students drawn from the St. Agnes' Parish Secondary Schools (MacKillop College, St Joseph's Regional College, and Newman Technical College) were crowned Australia Drumline Champions for the 5th consecutive year.

The group took out 1st place in both the Own Choice and Test Piece components of the competition (with scores of 91.90 and 92.00 respectively, with a combined score of 91.95), they finished 12.7 points clear of their closest competition, in addition to picking up every single caption award for best section (Best Snares, Best Tenors, Best Basses, Best Cymbals, and Best Colour Guard).

Competing under the Port Macquarie Vanguard moniker, this unprecedented level of excellence is a testament to the hard work and dedication of the students as well as the support from the schools. Their original show was titled "Danse Macabre", and was written in the fading shadows of the COVID-19 pandemic which has gripped Australia and the world over the past 2+ years.

SAPSS_Drumline_crop.jpg
In addition to the resounding success of the senior drumline, the Port Macquarie Brumbies Junior Drumline made their debut this season competing in the B division, which included students from not only the secondary schools but also the Parish primary school students as well.
Their effort in the test piece and their own choice floor show, titled "Perpetual Motion", were enough to secure a second-place finish in both the Test Piece and Own Choice components of the competition, and students should be proud of their hard work and results of their debut season.
SAPSS_Brumbies.jpg
The drumline soloists also shined through with amazing results. MacKillop College students, Andrew Skellern, claimed his first solo snare title with his solo titled "Prestige Worldwide", while last year's champion, Callum Pender-Buchan, took a close contested second with his "Bogan Disco".
This is the third time Port Macquarie Vanguard members have swept 1st & 2nd place in the snare solos, picking up the torch from Liam Coelho & Bailey Armstrong (2014) as well as Harry Amon & Hannah Daley (2017).

Congratulations also to Nick Horder for picking up a surprise 2nd place in the tenor section with his highly entertaining and completely improvised tenor solo titled "THE Tenor Solo".

Year 10 Work Experience

Congratulations to Year 10 student Cooper Mair, who has successfully completed a week of Work Experience at Taronga Zoo Sydney.

Cooper actively researched careers with animals and came across this Work Experience program. His application was selected from several students across the state who applied to attend. His Appraisal Report from Taronga Zoo is a glowing reference to his ability to work with others, communicate effectively and his excellent attitude to any work tasks he was assigned (there was a lot of cleaning the animal enclosures!).

Cooper was assigned the 'Backyard to Bush' section where he worked with the kangaroos, koalas, reptiles, birds and possums. He mostly enjoyed helping visitors to the zoo interact safely with the kangaroos through the kangaroo feeding program. During his free time at the zoo, he was allowed to visit all sections of the park and said he really enjoyed the marine section, especially the penguins.

We are very proud of Cooper and we know that he was a wonderful ambassador for the College. Well done Cooper.
