Term 1 Week 4 - 25th February 2022

This fortnight we have much to celebrate at the College.

Inaugural Swimming Carnival

Our Inaugural Swimming Carnival was held on Thursday, 17th February and we were blessed with perfect weather. The sense of House Spirit and community was wonderful to be a part of. Congratulations and thank you to Mr Damian Kelly, Leader of Sport, for the superbly planned and executed day. The day can only be made possible by the staff who also work as a great team and the students who bring their positive and “have a go” attitude.

Congratulations to all the Age Champions, runners-up to Age Champions, and the Macquarie House for taking out the Championship Shield.

A full list of results from the day can be found further down in the sport section of this newsletter and also on our College website.

Inaugural College Mass

Our Inaugural College Mass this year was not possible due to the continued indoor COVID restrictions, however, we were able to celebrate on Wednesday this week with a College Liturgy, live-streamed into Pastoral Care (PC) rooms. We welcomed and thank Fr Paul Gooley and our Student Leadership Team for their contribution to our opening Liturgy. My sincere thanks to Mr Timo Gobius, Leader of School Evangelisation, for the organisation and for commentating the Liturgy. Our theme of 'Excellence' was the focus and PC groups had an opportunity to commission the Prayer Spaces in their PC rooms at the conclusion of the Liturgy.

Year 7 Reflection Day

Year 7 participated in their Reflection Day yesterday (Thursday 24th February). The year group came together to build on their relationship with God, themselves, and others. My thanks to Mr Michael Walsh, Mr Timo Gobius, Mr Chris Kalchbauer, RE teachers, Teacher Assistants and YMOs for facilitating the day.

I refer you to our Leader of Mission, Mr Walsh's article for a more detailed report about the day.

College Traffic

road_safety.png
Thank you to parents who have delayed picking their children up in the afternoon until 3.30pm. This has definitely eased the traffic congestion.

A reminder to parents not to park in the bus bay areas while you are waiting prior to 3.15pm.

COVID-19 Guideline Changes

Today marks the end of the four-week back-to-school plan for COVID19. Families have been emailed the following updated guidelines outlining how we are moving forward with keeping our students safe.

My sincere thanks to families for supporting the College with administering Rapid Antigen Tests, communicating with the College, and following Public Health Orders.

Opening College Liturgy

Inaugural_Liturgy_230222_39_.jpg

On Wednesday morning we celebrated our Opening College Liturgy with Fr Paul. Due to COVID restrictions the liturgy, which was organised and led by Mr Gobius and the student leadership group, was delivered online. The liturgy, readings, and Fr Paul’s reflection were centered on this year's theme of ‘Excellence’. God challenges us to live a life of excellence in all that we do.

The Year 12 leaders were asked to reflect on the theme of 'Excellence' and they came up with the following ideas that were incorporated into the liturgy.

Student Quotes- What is Excellence?:

“Excellence is about an individual’s drive to be the best person they possibly can” Wilson House Leaders.

“We aim for excellence by uplifting others, being kind and coming together as one” Innes House Leaders.

“Excellence is not about skill, it is about attitude and is the vision to see obstacles as opportunities” College Captains.

I would like to include Fr Paul's reading as it makes us think, about what we can do in the pursuit of excellence in ourselves while also giving to others.

Fr Paul Gooley's reading:

Last Sunday I told people about the Law of the Echo.

The Law of the Echo holds that:

    • If you shout out – a shout will come back to you.
    • If you curse – then a curse will come back to you.
    • If you sing – then a song will come back to you.

The same Law also applies to life. You get back from life what you give to life and that’s what today’s Gospel is all about.

What Jesus is teaching;

    • is that if we are compassionate, then compassion will be ours in return.
    • If we judge others, around us then we too will be judged.
    • If we forgive others, then we will be forgiven.
    • If we condemn others, then we will be condemned too.
    • If we do good for others, then good will be done for us, however.
    • If we don’t do anything at all for others then nothing will happen for us.

So what Jesus is teaching us is that whatever we do, will come back to us like an echo does.

One of the hardest teachings in the Gospel is right at the beginning;

    • Love your enemies.
    • Do good to those who hate you.
    • Bless those who curse you.
    • Pray for those who treat you badly.

It is very hard to treat others well when they are so intent on causing us as much pain as possible, but Jesus is asking us the question - why add more hatred and darkness to our world. There’s enough of it already.

So, Jesus knows;

    • that the only way to defeat hatred is to love.
    • The only way to heal injury is to forgive.
    • The only way to defeat evil is by doing good.

Our challenge is to be like Christ and through the living of our lives in this Year of Excellence, make a difference by excelling at being a loving, forgiving, good and helpful person to all at St Joseph’s Regional College this year.

Pastoral Care (PC) groups worked collaboratively to identify how they can contribute to ensuring that their PC group fosters excellence in all that they do. I am pleased to say, that the results of this activity will allow us to develop a unique poster that will be displayed in their rooms. The goal of this activity will be that these agreed practices will guide their behavior and interactions with other community members.

As part of the liturgy, Pastoral Care groups created their own Scared Space in their PC rooms. This Sacred Space is a reminder of God’s presence with us each day. As prayer is an important part of our Catholic tradition, this space will be used as a focus for prayer each day.

Year 7 Reflection Day

Yr7_Reflection_Day_240222_29_.JPG

Year 7 students came together on Thursday at the St Agnes’ Church and Youth Hub to develop their sense of a faith-based community here at SJRC. Central to this day was for the students to understand that God loves and values all people, and that we contribute to developing a faith-based community that is inclusive of all people.

The students also experienced a narrated Mass which enabled them to better understand the components, actions, and responses of the mass.

Student's thoughts on the day:

“It was good that the Mass was narrated because I got to learn what was happening. All the activities were run really well” Tallowa

“The activities were fun to do and the Mass was nice with the parishioners. Getting to know different students in the activities helped in building our Year 7 community” Keely

“It was really fun and exciting. I learnt a lot about our religion. I really enjoyed the Mass and walking around the Church.” Odin

Thank you to Mr Gobius, our YMOs, and the many staff who supported Year 7 students throughout this valuable day.

    • During Lent, we set aside a time for fasting, prayer, and almsgiving as the intentional season of focus on Christ.

Student Photos

Photo envelope.jpg

Students will have their College photos taken on Monday, 28th February. All students are required to wear their formal College uniform on Monday. If students have a sport or practical experience on that day, they should bring their sport uniform to get changed into after their photograph has been taken.

All students should have received their photo envelope, however, there are spares available in the office if available. Envelopes must be completed and handed directly to the photographer on the day. A “sibling package” and “friends photo” are also available for purchase - students should collect an additional envelope from the office to order these special photos. For any student absent on Monday, a catch-up day has been arranged for Friday 4th March.

eSafety Webinaresafety.png

The Council of Catholic School Parents will be hosting an eSafety Webinar for parents of young people aged 10 - 18 years on Tuesday, 8th March from 7.30 - 8.30pm. The webinar is run by the eSafety Commissioner. We recommend you attend this free event, registration is via THIS LINK.

Code of Presentation

Shorts.jpg

Maintaining high standards of student presentation through compliance with the Student Code of Conduct is one of the ways in which we build a strong and focussed learning culture here at SJRC. Additionally, adherence to guidelines and procedures promotes world-readiness for our young people as they look towards workplace experiences.

Please be aware that the Code of Presentation specifies that shorts should be “mid-thigh length”. We have noticed that some students wearing the older style shorts have needed a reminder to wear appropriately sized mid-thigh length shorts or to unroll their shorts at the waistline.

We thank our parents for your partnership in this area.

Smooth Transition

Congratulations to Year 7 who have enjoyed such a positive and smooth transition into their Secondary Schooling. Feedback from teaching staff has been overwhelmingly positive. It has been wonderful this year that we are been able to facilitate vital community building activities such as the Reflection Day, held yesterday, and Positive Education Day (Week 6) for our Year 7 students.

It is such a joy for our staff to walk alongside Year 7 as they make brand new connections and tap into all the opportunities this wonderful community has to offer.

Interview Booking Procedures

Year 7 - This night provides parents/guardians of Year 7 students with the opportunity to have a 5 minute meeting with each of their child's teachers (not PC Teachers as you met with them early in the year).  Students are encouraged to attend the evening with their parents.

Year 7 students will be given a note on Monday 28th outlining the process for booking an interview time with each of your child's teachers. To assist you with your booking, your child's teachers and subjects are printed on the back of the note.

Year 11 & 12 - These interviews provide an opportunity to discuss your child’s progress in either their Preliminary or HSC Courses.

In order to book your interviews (5 minutes per teacher) please visit the following website: http://www.schoolinterviews.com.au/book

You will need a copy of your child’s timetable with subjects and teachers' names for each subject.

Enter the School Event Code from the box below

When you click finish, your interview timetable will be emailed to you automatically – check your junk mail folder if you do not receive your email immediately.
You can return to the site at any time and change your interviews – until bookings close.

Please REMEMBER to bring the confirmation email with your interview times on it to the evening.

Parents who do not have access to the internet at home, at work, at a friend’s house, or on their phones, may send a note in with the approximate times they require or phone the College on 5525 4100.

We look forward to meeting with you.

study_skills.jfif

On Wednesday 9th March, Year 11 and Year 12 will attend Study Skills seminars, conducted by Elevate Education. These seminars have proved to be extremely useful over the years and are a great opportunity for Year 11 students to pick up skills that will help them handle the increased workload of senior school, and assist Year 12 students in preparing for their major exams at the end of the year.

HSC Minimum Standards - Online Writing Test

NSW_education_standards.png

This week Year 10 students have begun preparation for their HSC Minimum Standards online writing test. Working with Mr Ian Lutton, Leader of Curriculum, Mrs Sarah McLeod, Literacy Intervention and their class teachers, students in their English classes will undertake a five-lesson program over the next four weeks to build and develop their writing skills.

These sessions will focus on how to;

  • generate ideas in response to a visual or written prompt
  • plan, organise and structure the response, and
  • effectively edit their writing to ensure the construction of an accurate and fluent text.

While the aim is to ensure our Year 10 students are prepared and comfortable with their undertaking of the Minimum Standards writing test, the overarching goal is to aid their growth as well-planned, fluent and sophisticated writers; which will be advantageous throughout their next two years of schooling and beyond.

Subject and Activity Accounts
We are currently in the process of billing Subject and Activity costs to College accounts. Statements will be emailed to families next week.

Student Verification Forms
Student_Verification_report.JPGThank you to the many families who have already returned the updated form. We ask that you make it a priority to return your child's Student Verification Report, noting any changes. It is important that this report is returned even if there are no changes made.

Attendance
Research shows that even one day off can be detrimental to student learning. Whilst we realise sickness and family situations arise we encourage all students to aim for 100% attendance.

Attendance Matters.png

How can I notify the College if my child will be absent?

*Please use the above link, rather than emailing the College.

St Joseph's Regional College yearly reports for all students in Year 7-12 will record attendance at special events such as Masses, Feast Days, Retreats, Camps, and Sporting Carnivals. The report will simply indicate whether or not students were in attendance on these days irrespective of sickness, leave etc.

If you would like further explanation of this reporting initiative, please contact Mrs Jennifer Furney.

Late Arrival to the College

late.JPG

Students arriving late must report to the College Office prior to going to Pastoral Care (PC). This includes arriving late during PC time 8.45am- 9.05am. Doing this will avoid students being marked absent.

Early Departure from the College
We ask that families endeavour not to pick students up, unless in an emergency, prior to 3.15pm. Arriving late and departing early places increased pressure on students in relation to catching up on missed work. It is also disruptive for other students and teachers when students enter or leave a lesson during class time.

Early_leave.JPG

Wherever possible, please ensure appointments are made outside of school hours. However, if this is not possible, it would be appreciated if collection times can be arranged for the end of a period.

When collecting students early from the College, please follow the procedure below.

  • Note from parent/guardian. Noting the reason for early leave, time the student will be leaving, and who will be collecting your child.
  • Students are to report to the College Office prior to morning PC, with the note from home, where an Early Leave Pass will be issued.
  • The student shows the pass to their respective class teacher at the beginning of the lesson they will be leaving from. When close to departure time, the student will then politely inform the class teacher that it is time for them to go to the office to be collected.

Please note: If a student does not come to the office at the arranged time, we may not be able to call the classroom or use our internal or external systems. This may result in parents having to wait until the end of the period to collect their child.
We thank you for your cooperation with these procedures.

We have received a number of emails requesting messages in regards to leaving early to be passed onto students. Please note, our College email is checked intermittently throughout the day, therefore, we may miss the time required for the message to be passed on. Please contact the College Office if the above procedure was not able to be followed.

Messages/Items passed onto Students
Our College Office staff are happy to and will do their very best to pass on messages Forgot_something.jfifand forgotten items, however, on some occasions, students have not come to the office to receive these messages/items. We encourage students to take responsibility for preparing the required items for each school day.

We ask that any items to be passed onto students are to be in a plastic bag with their name clearly written on it.

Mobile Phone Usage

mobile phone.jpg

A reminder that students in Years 7-10 are not permitted to use their mobile phone between the hours of 8.15am-3.15pm. The College rules clearly state this, and it is College policy that students using their mobile phone will have it confiscated until parents can collect it, and the student will be given afternoon detention.

Senior students may use their phone at recess or lunch, however, no student is to phone parents to be picked up. This call must be made by the College Office.
Students are very aware of the rules regarding mobile phone usage. The Acceptable Use Agreement for Digital Technologies Policy on mobile phone usage can be found on pages 20-22 of the College Diary.

Sick at School Procedures
Sickbay.jpgStudents are not permitted to phone parents from mobile phones when they are ill and requesting to be collected. Students are to advise their class teacher that they are unwell. The teacher will then sign their diary and they will be allowed to go to the sickbay where office staff will contact their parents/carers.

If your child does contact you from a mobile phone, we would ask that you phone the front office prior to coming out to the College in order to avoid an uncomfortable situation for all concerned, and detentions having to be issued. Please note that regular late arrivals and early departures are detrimental to your child’s overall attendance rate and education.

Lockers

Lockers.jpgWe still have a number of Lockers available. Locker hire for the year is $20.00, which will be billed to your account once your child has been allocated a locker. This fee includes locker hire & use of the lock for the school year.

If a student requires a locker for medical reasons, please contact Mrs Julie Hickling in the College Office to make immediate arrangements.

All locks must be returned at the end of the school year or if the student leaves the College. If locks are not returned the student account will be billed an additional $20.00.

Medical Alert - please keep us updated

Medical_alert.JPG
The College maintains a “Medical Alert Information Card” for students which is displayed in an appropriate area in the staff room. Please be mindful of informing the College of any diagnosis or change in medical conditions for your child. This is especially important for those students with Anaphylaxis, Asthma, Seizures, Diabetes, and Epilepsy.

In order to keep our records up to date, we ask that you update these very important details at your earliest convenience, via the following link. Medical Information Form

If your child has an allergy or anaphylaxis, please forward to the College the ASCIA form completed by their doctor.

If you need further information or assistance, please do not hesitate to contact Mrs Joanne Williams in the College Office.

Excursions

excursions.JPG

All excursion information is sent to parents/guardians via email. A link to an online permission form is included for your convenience and must be completed in order for your child to attend any off-campus activities. On some occasions emails may land in your spam/junk inbox, if this does happen, please add the pmreg-excursion@lism.catholic.edu.au email address to your contacts.

Year 7 Book Club

This week we have launched a new book club. We have an exclusive Year 7 Book Club that will meet on a Tuesday in Week 4 and Week 8. We meet at recess, when the library is normally closed allowing for our Year 7 students to feel totally comfortable and in their own domain. This club is only small, with new members most welcome at any time. We run our book clubs a little differently, in that each student can read books that appeal to them. They then share their opinions, their ideas, and their recommendations with other members of the club.

Page Turners

Page Turners, our book club for students in year groups 8-12, is recommencing this week too. Everyone is most welcome to come along and share the stories they have been reading. We value both student and staff reading recommendations for our school community.
