Emmaus Village Residential Visit

Emmaus_Yr_10_classical_concert_8_.JPG

This week, we had the absolute pleasure of hosting a Classical Music concert for the residents of Emmaus Village. The concert, held in the Library, was performed by Year 10 Elective Music students and the College Choir. Thank you to Mr David Constantine and the senior Hospitality students who provided a delicious morning tea of scones for the residents.

The Year 10 Elective Music class have been studying a compulsory 'Classical' topic. Each student had to prepare an item by a composer from 1600-1900. Thank you to Music teachers, Mrs Young and Mrs McNamara, who ably prepared students to explain clearly to the residents a little about their pieces before they performed on their chosen instrument.

Well done to the College Choir, for their performance of the well-known Cole Porter song “True Love”, made famous by Bing Crosby. It was a great hit, which saw the residents singing along with them.

Thank you to our Librarian, Mrs Karyn Mooney, for organising this special event which brought so much joy to the residents, staff and students.

Administering Non-Prescription Medication (eg. Paracetamol) to Students

Paracetamol.jpeg

Our Office staff are now able to administer pain relief medication to students who present to the office/sick bay feeling unwell or experiencing significant or acute pain. In all cases, a member of staff will contact the student's parent or guardian seeking permission to administer non-prescription pain relief eg. paracetamol.

If a parent or guardian can not be contacted, the student will remain in the office/sick bay. However, we will not be able to give them any non-prescription pain relief medication.

It must be noted: any previous permission to give non-prescription pain relief no longer applies. You will receive a phone call each time your child presents to the office seeking consent for pain relief.

Savannah's Big Chop

In our last newsletter, I told you about Year 9 student Savannah Beard, and her efforts in raising awareness for kids with cancer. On the weekend, Savannah cut off 60cm of her hair which will be donated to make wigs for kids with cancer. Savannah along with her sister, are also raising funds for the Hair with Heart foundation to support sick kids.

It's not too late to donate to Hair with Heart

Easter Liturgy

This week we held our Easter Liturgy in the College Hall. The liturgy was presented as the traditional Way of the Cross and each still-life scene was acted by students of all ages and guided by myself, Mr Hyland. Mr Jennings and his tribe of readers took us on a journey through each of the 14 Stations of the Cross, focusing on Jesus and the story of the crucifixion. We heard stories about some of the people that our fundraising for Caritas during Lent assists, and we finished each station with a Prayer. Although Jesus died on the Cross in the final scene, we were reassured that the story does have a happy ending when he rose again. His death on the cross for our sins offers us salvation in Him if we believe in Him. We were encouraged to follow the way of justice by doing what god requires of all people, not only Christians, which is “to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God” (Micah 6:8).

Our fundraising total for project compassion this year currently stands at approximately $5750.00. This money will assist Caritas in providing programs and support to people who are living in poverty and in circumstances that do not uphold the dignity of the human person.

Congratulations, and thank you to the following students who were involved in the Easter Liturgy.

Lent the Musical

Yr9_LENT_the_Musical_290323_147_.jpg
Last Wednesday, 29th March, Year 9 Music Elective class, together with the Year 9 Dance Elective class, worked together to create an informative account of Lent. Two matinee shows were presented to an audience of 400 Year 3 and 4 students from St Peters Primary, St Agnes' Primary and St Joseph’s Primary, Port Macquarie.
Year 9 music students have been working on a unit of work about musicals, and what better way to showcase their efforts than by creating and performing a musical. Lent the Musical, was a six-week project coordinated by the Leader of Creative Arts, Mrs Leanne Johnson.  The 22 elective music students worked together to create every aspect needed for a musical. All the band, singing, acting and lines to memorise, the puppets, costumes and props were all prepared for the 45-minute children’s musical that presented the meaning of Lent in an engaging manner for primary-aged students.
To end the show, the Year 9 Dance elective class performed a beautiful dance to the song  ‘Gethsemane’, choreographed by Dance teacher, Mrs Sophie Woods.
We are very proud of the student's efforts.  There were plenty of action songs for the audience to join in, and the show was a big hit.
Some feedback from the Year 4 St Agnes' students:

Dear Mrs Johnson, Thank you for making the lent musical and dance happen. I really liked the puppets and the dance. I also liked Jesus giving me high fives. - Beau Lill

Dear Mrs Johnson, I loved the changing between the instruments, especially the guitar and the ukulele. - Kitt Quirk

I really like the singing and dancers  it was so good  - Jayde Bruce

The mini-lent musical was funny and helped me learn more about Jesus at the same time. - Patrick McNally

Thank you for inviting us to the show

Thank you for the extraordinary performance I really loved the songs and the puppets. - Xavier Hearn

Dear Mrs Johnson, I loved the instruments and that it was about God. I also loved how funny the puppets were. I also loved how the dancers lifted the other dancers because that is very hard. - Marlie Baillie

An amazing musical I loved it!!!!! - Owen Nesbitt

Last week all families received correspondence from the school regarding the upcoming Tell Them From Me student surveys. From April 24th, there will also be a parent survey we are inviting all parents and carers to complete. Please keep an eye on your inbox for a link to the parent survey, which should take no more than 15-20 minutes to complete.

What is the Tell Them From Me survey?
Tell Them From Me is a suite of surveys for measuring student engagement and wellbeing. The surveys can be used to capture student, parent and teacher voices, providing reliable evidence for schools to use in identifying strengths and areas for improvement.

Is the survey anonymous?
Yes. Student, parent and teacher surveys are all strictly anonymous. Parents will be provided with a link to the survey page and are not required to log in or provide an email address. Students are given a randomly generated username and password for their one-time survey response, which is not linked to their school email address.

Who sees the responses?
Lismore CSO and the SJRC Leadership Team will have access to the data generated from the surveys. The data will allow us to see how SJRC is travelling across a number of engagement areas and will also compare our data to other schools within our Diocese and other like schools around the country. No one is able to access or view survey responses in the singular; all data is collective data that has been compiled across many surveys.

What is done with the data?
Feedback from the student, teacher and parent surveys will inform important decision-making about school improvement and student learning. Analysis of this data will allow us to make decisions to enhance: learning for students in classrooms; wellbeing programs for students at school; the manner in which we as a school communicate and engage with our parents and carers.

Thank you in advance for your valued participation in this survey!

Cyber Safety

At St Joseph's Regional College, we are committed to the growth and development of our young people in all aspects of their lives. During Week 9 and Week 10, students in Years 7 - 10 were addressed by expert guest speakers from our community partners.

Optus Digital Thumbprint Presentations - Tuesday, 28th March.

Year 7 and 8 students learned about Cyberbullying, how to stay safe online and what to do if they found themselves in an online interaction that caused alarm for them.

Year 9 and 10 students learned about how to generate and maintain a positive online identity. This is particularly important for these young people who will be moving into part-time or full-time employment in the years ahead. Students learned about how to avoid reputational damage through positive online conduct and how to ensure they are staying safe online.

Cyber_Safety_Digital_Thubprint_290323_8_.jpg

Schools Liaison Police Officer Presentations - Tuesday, 4th April.

Year 7 and 8 students came together to hear from our Schools Liaison Police Officer. Senior Constable Steve Jefferey, and his colleague Senior Constable Tracy Watt. Steve and Tracy shared their expertise on topics such as how to recognise and avoid predatory online interactions, how to report harmful online experiences and examples of situations where young people have found themselves in dangerous online situations.

Year 9 and 10 then heard some important anti-violence messaging from Steve and Tracy. Our students learned about the harmful effects of violence and other risk-taking behaviours, especially in relation to driving, drugs and alcohol.

We thank our guests for attending our College and sharing their expertise with us. These sessions were valuable learning experiences for our Years 7 - 10 students.

Happy_Easter.JPG

As we conclude the last week of Term One, I would like to congratulate all the students who have successfully navigated their studies over the course of the term. Students have been encouraged throughout the term to set high expectations for themselves and the quality of the work they do on a daily basis. Whilst we often experience highs and lows during a term, a focus on continuous improvement and a steady deepening of skills and understandings helps us to navigate our educational journey throughout Years 7-12. With most subjects having completed one assessment task this term, it is important to reflect on the feedback provided and identify areas of growth for Term Two.

Finally, I wish all our families a happy and holy Easter break. To staff and students, I hope you enjoy the well-earned rest over the school holidays and recharge your batteries, ready for the demands of Term Two.

Year 7-11 Interim Reports

Year 7-11 Interim Reports are now viewable on the St Joseph's Regional College Parent Portal. These interim reports are a good guide to how your daughter or son has progressed during Term 1 and report on a students’ work habits and their approach to learning in their individual classes. Year 12 Semester 1 reports will be issued early in Term 2.

As the term comes to a close, I ask you to continue to encourage your children to apply themselves to their studies to the best of their ability and have a productive end to the first school term of the academic year.

Taree Health Forum

On Wednesday, 22nd March, Year 11 and 12 students had the opportunity to participate in The University of Newcastle Department of Rural Health (UONDRH) Health Careers Forum.

The forum included presentations and workshops by academics, clinicians and current UONDRH students from health disciplines, including; Medicine, Medicine-CPR, Medicine-neurology, Physiotherapy, Occupational Therapy and Speech Pathology. Also, UON Student ambassador Rhiana Trevenen-Smith was available to discuss the entry process into the university.

All students found the information sessions not only informative but also very enjoyable through the interactive hands-on approach used by the presenters. Several students commented that their participation in the forum helped to clarify their decisions around career choices in the area of Allied Health.

Thank you to the UONDRH team, Ian Woodley (Community Engagement Manager University of Newcastle Department of Rural Health College of Health and Medicine) and also Jo Pilgrim from MacKillop College for making the forum possible.

In some of the photos, you might spot Michael Barnes - ex-student of SJRC who is studying to be a Doctor, who volunteered his time to be part of the Forum.
