2017 State Finals Open Boys 7s Rugby Union

This week Mr. Rossington, our TAS trainee Jack Steinmetz and I had the pleasure of taking our Open Boys 7s Rugby team down to the state finals in Sydney.  We traveled down on Monday and checked into our accommodation at The Kings School at Pennant Hills which also doubled as the tournament venue on Tuesday.

The ten teams in the competition were divided into 2 pools.  No doubt we had the toughest pool and the toughest start meeting two Sports High Schools in the first two rounds – Westfields we down 26 – 7 & The Hills losing 35 – 0.  This was certainly a reality check with the bigger boys from these schools intimidating our team and causing errors which we had not experienced in the preliminary rounds.

Terrigal High School were next.  We played a much more disciplined match coming out winners 22 – 12. The last pool game against Hunter Grammar was very even and low scoring.  In a dower struggle we were narrowly pipped 7 – 5 to finish 4th in our pool.

The last game of the day was the 7th/8th playoff against fourth in the other pool – St. Paul’s Manly.  Once again this proved to be a close tussle.  We eventually went down 19-12 after scoring on the final hooter to give us something to cheer about before leaving for home.

The coaches would like to congratulate all boys involved on the way they conducted themselves on and off the field over the two days.  They may have lost but but did so with dignity and great sportsmanship – never letting losing get in the way of the bigger picture.  When they arrived at Regional they may have been boys but we took away a group of young men who are strong ambassadors of the College.  They are certainly proof of what six years here at SJRC produces.  Well done boys.
